Health requirements
Mozambique is a malaria zone. The tropical climate is ideal for anopheles mosquitoes, which transmit malaria. Please use a mosquito repellent and consult your doctor about malaria medication. The area around the lodge does not have many mosquitoes, however mosquito nets are standard in all rooms as an additional precaution.
Climate
Mozambique has a wonderful climate. The summers can be hot but the lodge’s position is ideal. The cool dune forest and air conditioning will ensure your comfort. One is very unlikely to experience multiple rainy days in a row and most of our rains come in the form of quick thunderstorms. Mozambique experiences rain mainly during November and December, while August is the driest month.
Entry requirements
All visitors need a passport valid for at least six months and a visa. Most nationalities require a visa to travel to Mozambique except the citizens of South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Botswana. There is much confusion as to whether visas may be obtained on entry, so rather obtain one in advance. Visitors arriving by car or 4×4 should notify our reservations for details please.
Transfers
Machangulo Beach Lodge is the most easily accessible luxury Beach Lodge in Mozambique. Maputo is easily reached by flights from most airports in South Africa or by road. We can organise self-drive and guided transfers into Maputo from anywhere in South Africa. There are many options to travel to the lodge but most guests opt out for our luxury speed boat transfers. The journey to the lodge takes one hour from Maputo and the boat ride is an exciting experience, leading guests around the picturesque Inhaca Island and the estuaries of Maputo Bay. Self-drive and 4×4 options are also available for those who seek a bit more adventure. The road to the lodge guides you through the Special Maputo Elephant Reserve. There are no roads that lead all the way to the lodge – driving guests will still be picked up from Santa Maria by boat. One can also fly to Inhaca Island. The scenic flight from Maputo takes only about 15 minutes and you will again be taken to the lodge by boat from the airstrip.
